1. Ethical Nursing Obligations
According to Henk (2014), one of the most difficult decisions a healthcare provider has to make is the decision to stop life-sustaining measures. Henk (2014), describes two required conditions that have to be met in order morally provide treatment. First, the treatment must be deemed medically indicated; the provider must take into account the patient’s diagnosis and prognosis and determine if it benefits the patient or cause harm to the patient. Second the patient or the patient’s power of attorney must be informed about their condition and the nature of their treatment and consent to the treatment plan, and verbalize understanding in regards to informed consent. The nursing obligation in this particular case was to provide the patient with the care the patient required outlined by the law. This would include artificial nutrition, suctioning, wound care, oxygenation, and full resuscitative measures.
