Throughout the world, we as a society are faced with ethical problems practically everyday. How we handle these circumstances shapes our way of life. What are ethics? According to dictionary.com ethics is described as “the rules of conduct recognized in respect to a particular class of human actions or a particular group, culture, etc.” What ethics means to me is basically just doing what’s right at all times even when no one is watching.
Since birth, majority of us were taught what is right and wrong. Yes, we might know something is wrong but some people have problems with still doing the right thing. I feel the biggest problem that we have had with ethics is how it is taught to people. Ethics should be put into practice on a daily basis. In class, we learned about the 10-80-10 rule. Within that rule, 10 percent of the population is always ethical, 80 percent try to be ethical and, then 10 percent is always unethical. That struck home with me as I was trying to figure out what percentage I was in along with my friends and family. For me personally, I would think I’m part of that 80 percent, but I also know people that are from each category. I feel as if ethics is a topic in which many people have a tendency to ignore.
Ethics should be important in all aspects of life but should be highlighted in business. Business institutes and assorted careers carry out daily activities that need values of ethical behavior. To express a company’s ideals, principles, and goals most companies develop a document called a code of ethics that classify the behavior that others can expect from them. A business code of ethics is an accommodating tool used in a profession or business to assess its performance in the business world. Each day in the workplace, people encounter ethical situations to which they must react.
