Euthanasia must be legalized by the government
Before I delve into this any further let me begin with a heart-warming story of Mrs. Hilly Bosscher, who is a physically fit fifty year old social worker. It was in 1991 that Mrs. Bosscher came to a well known psychiatrist named Dr. Boudewijn Chabot for seeking help in committing suicide. The situation was extremely peculiar for Dr. Chabot as it was very rare for to see someone who is as physically fit as Mrs. Bosscher wanted to commit suicide. Seeing this the doctor decided to dig further into the life of Mrs. Bosscher and what he found was really sad. He learnt that she was divorced from a physically abusive alcoholic husband and had had two sons both of whom had died, first some years earlier by suicide and second more recently from cancer. It was after the death of her second son that Mrs. Bosscher decided that she no longer wanted to go on living even though she did try to commit suicide the day her younger son died but she failed and from that day on wards she wanted to be assisted in committing suicide. Surprisingly though Dr. Chabot found her to be a down-toearth woman whose contact with reality was never disturbed or did not find any signs of mental disorder. Nevertheless he had offered her antidepressant medication and tried to persuade her to enter therapeutic community so that she can find some reasons to go on living. She refused both. She simply wanted to die, for her life had no purpose without her sons in it. She wanted assistance in suicide because she wanted to her death to be peaceful and nonviolent, so that she was assured of success unlike the last time. Dr. Chabot though discussed the dilemma with many other psychiatrists and general practitioners none of whom had met Mrs. Bosscher personally so that they can give a second opinion about the case.
