Evan Nakashige English 1A, Smith 5 October 2008 For Grandpa Finally, it was day one of the five dreaded days. Besides the fact that my toe would be hurting, at that time in my life, I was going through a minor case of social anxiety. It wasn’t anything I was diagnosed with, but nonetheless,knew it was there. I didn’t have many friends in Hawaii besides my cousins, and I wasn’t one to approach someone and strike up a conversation about what I considered nonsense. A lot of the time I felt I was, not necessarily “better,” but felt like I knew everything and nobody could tell me anything I already knew; that was my attitude going in. It was not a good start. It is the reason why I was so introverted before the camp and always wondered why I didn’t have the most friends or wasn’t the most popular. Over the course of the next five days, I learned more about my character thanI ever have and probably ever will in my lifetime. As my grandpa and I sat waiting in an old campus hall with all the other kids, I overheard the local boys talking about their weekends together and how fun this camp was going to be. This is where I felt most uncomfortable, because I wasn’t “local” in the sense that everyone else was. Everyone seems to know each other, it’s an “aloha” thing, and I didn’t know one person going in, except my grandpa. He stood there by my side as we picked up my nametag at the registrar. When it was time for me to continue on my own, he left the hall and went up into the stands of the big stadium. He prepared to stay there all day and brought nothing but a cooler with a few drinks and some spam musubis. My toe was always aching and in pain, but I got used to it and learned to work through it. It kind of forced me to developa sort of “mental toughness” in doing so. It was such a burden, but I wouldn’t let it be an excuse for anything. My coach knew my situation, and that was enough, it was no reason why I couldn’t keep up with all the other players on my squad,...
