Explain the Ways in Which You Would Establish
Ground Rules with Your Learners, and Which
Underpin Behaviour and Respect for Others

Introduction

The following assignment outlines a number of ways to establish ground rules with learners that will also underpin behaviour and respect for others.

Approach 1: Autocratic
Approach 2: Democratic
Approach 3: Anonymous Vote
Approach 4: Role Play

Approach 1: Autocratic
Autocratic approach is needed when there are set policies and legislation already
in place. Established ground rules, such as Health and Safety, have already been discussed
and agreed for the benefit of all, not just the learner. These rules can be justified by
explaining policy and discussing the possible consequences of failure to follow them.

Approach 2: Democratic
Democratic approach includes every learner and takes the form of debates and
discussions by way of brainstorming. This way, everyone has their opinion heard. Learners are divided into different groups that establish and justify a list of do’s and don’ts. Once listed, the opposing group gives their opinions about the others’ lists, thereby refining the rules even further.

Approach 3: Anonymous Vote
Some learners are challenged with a fear of conflict. An approach to overcoming this
is anonymous voting, as seen at polling stations during election times. This way, the teacher defines a list of preferred ground rules, but by using anonymous voting, the learner picks their own choice(s), thereby giving the learner inclusion and ownership,
but avoiding potential conflict. The majority ‘votes’ are then adopted as ground rules.

Approach 4: Role Play
Role play is used to give a sense of total inclusivity to learners, acting out and solving problem scenarios as a group, which will help to understand cause and effect.

Summary
With any of the listed approaches, it is to be noted that the ground rules must be clear and for the learner to understand that every one of the rules will benefit them. With approaches 2 to 4, the rules are set-up with the input of the learner, making rules more...
