Wow, the past three lessons have been a great learning experience for me and I have taken in quite a bit in just a few chapters. The ten things that most stand out, from what I have learned, are; the kind of helper category I could fall into, and at this moment I would be in the Nonprofessional Helper category on an informal basis, only. I am usually the “ear” for my family and friends’, however the next lesson turns out to be that, although I am all ears, I am not a great listener. So, of coarse, learning experience number three has me asking myself, “am I a true and beneficial helper?” I can honestly say that there are situations where I have been a good helper, but I can also see where I could have gone wrong! Another learning experience has been all the new wording terminology that I have never seen or heard of before, such as; Ethnocentrism, “The belief by members of a specific culture that their ideas about the universe are the way things are, the way things should be, and the way others see them.” Truthfully, this is a new word for me.
I have always been a talker, but I know that in just a few weeks I have become a better communicator. My husband and I talk about everything under the sun and just the other evening my husband said to me, “we have always talked about everything, but I feel like we are “communicating” better.” This made me smile!
I have learned some different formats to counseling. There are helpful and non-helpful behaviors of communicating. I have also learned some of the differences between cognitive and affective messages. My husband and I were coming out of my doctor’s appointment and something bothered him, I could tell just by a look he gave! I asked him was something wrong and he said, “I didn’t say anything, my love” so I told him “no, but your non-verbal facial expression did” and we both started laughing! It was really cute to solve a situation in such a way. Last but not least this class is also teaching...
