A marvel of human anatomy, the ankle, is composed of various ligaments, bones and joints. Composed together, the fibula, Tibia, Talus, and the calcaneus make up the ankle. Capable of sustaining eight times your body weight when running, and up to one and a half times your body weight while walking. The ankle is an awesome component of your body; it can handle enormous amounts of pressure per square inch.
Possibly the most vital part of the ankle, the ligaments are comprised of tiny rope like fibers called collagen. Ligaments make it possible for bones to be attached to bones witch allow the ankles abilities. Ligaments surround every side of the ankle to support the bones and help prevent injury. Three ligaments make up the lateral ligament complex, which is located on the outer side of the ankle. This complex is composed of anterior talofibular ligament, the calcaneofibular ligament talofibular ligament. These three ligaments offer the ankle support and stability. A thick ligament, called the deltoid ligament, supports the medial ankle (opposite side of the ankle). Ligaments also support the lower leg, which creates a hinge for the ankle, which allows the ankle to operate in the manner it does. But all of the movements that the ankle does would be impossible with out the large Achilles tendon. This tendon makes it possible for us to walk, run and rise on our toes. It attaches the muscles of the lower leg to the heel bone. Another important tendon is the posterior tibial tendon, this tendon allows us the ability to turn our foot inward As well the anterior tibial tendon enables us to lift our foot up. Two tendons cooperatively form the peroneals help turn the foot out and down.
