Working as the soundboard operator for the play Fabulation: Or the Re-Education of Undine I got to see firsthand the production progress. From the start of my arrival with the ensemble, the acting was up to par, in my opinion. I say that because most of the performers did not have their lines memorized, some were using unjustified gestures, others were not using props as properly as I would have liked, and a few were not projecting very much so it was kind of difficult to hear from the back of the house in the sound booth. However, I enjoyed the process of seeing them grow from not up to par to a polished performance by Sunday night.
The lead role of Undine played by Chelsea was from my perspective a very difficult one to play. Because she never left the stage and had numerous lines in every scene but my hat goes off to her for doing such a wonderful job in characterization, relationship, and for not keeping her performance the same each night. I believed that her subtly changing her actions and gestures stood out the most of her performance. One night she played her actions in the first scene with Stephie (Stacy) as the over-confident, selfish boss. Another night she played it as the timid, emotional manager. She used different props throughout the run the show also. For instance, she smoked a cigarette during the scene with the African (Marcus) once, put on sunglasses when she encounter Devora (Nerlyn) and Rosa (Eboney) one show, and wiped off the chair when she returned home one performance.
Another player that interested me was the first Inmate/Social Worker (Jessica). Her characterization was clearly distinct and played her actions and gestures phenomenally. As the Inmate she had good physical posture, standing still and erect with no fear of the person in front of her. She made it clear for me how her character behaved and what her role was inside the jailhouse. The social I thought was another great character choice because she establishes a good...
