In 1993, our president Bill Clinton signed the Family and Medical Leave Act, which applies to all public agencies, all public and private elementary and secondary schools and companies or firms with fifty or more employees (Solis, 2009).The Family and Medical Leave Act is defined as, Federal law requiring firms with fifty or more employees to grant up to twelve weeks of unpaid leave following the birth or adoption of a child or the placement of a foster child, or during the serious illness of the employee or member of his or her family (Kuhl, E., 2003, p 374). The author of this article, Hilda L. Solis- Secretary of Labors did a good job explaining the Family and Medical Leave Act and what this act consists of. The purpose of this article is to give awareness and understanding to families that there is something out there to help with maintaining work and home/family responsibilities. That families, employees and even employers are not alone, that there is a great resource out there for the company to use if they were to need it.
The Family and Medical Leave Act entitles employees to take up to twelve weeks unpaid or job-protected leave under the circumstance of a birth of a child or adoption, serious health conditions of an immediate family member (spouse, child, parent), employees’ own serious health conditions, time taken off work due to pregnancy complications and effective January 16th 2009 military family leave. Employees that are eligible for this leave are employees that first, have worked for a company with fifty employees or more and second, have worked for their employer for at least twelve months and or at least 1,250 hours over the past twelve months. I can’t help to feel that this act is for the employees that have put the time and fort into their company and deserve this, I guess what I’m trying to say it that it is kind of a bonus in a since to come to work every day and work hard and in the end it will pay off.
I firmly agree with this...
