Developing a strong and healthy family system consist of being attentive to the needs of each
individual family member and to the needs of the family as a unit. The way most families are
structured in our nation this has become very rare. “Families are the original environment for the
vast majority in every culture and remain influential throughout life. Healthy families provide the
foundation for the mental, physical, social and economic well-being for each person”(George,
2013, p. 531).
Family Systems and Healthy Development
Success as a spouse and parent is actually dependent on communication and
empowerment. Healthy family systems and the development of relationships are built on a strong
foundation of love, communication and empowerment. If there are communication
issues in the family the supportive, cooperative healthy family will most likely not exist. It is
important for each parent to understand and fulfil their roles within the family. For instance if a
parent does not share equal time with all members of the family and favors spending time only
with the husband the children will feel neglected. If the parent only spends time with the children
and neglects the spouse this will also become a problem.
Parent that set clear boundaries and are emotionally and physically available promote
independence in the child. Authoritative parents that are actively engaged in the growth and
nurturing process help the child become more adjusted in life issues.
Determining Factors that Distinguish Healthy Family Systems
There are many distinguishing factors that identify the characteristics of a healthy family.
Each person is instrumental in helping to create a powerful bond by operating in flexibility,
respect, and structure. This type of interaction supports and leads to healthy development as a
