HPE - Figueroa’s Framework

Peter Figueroa (31st Jan 1936 – 10th Aug 2011) was a famous sociologist who was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica. He was raised in a family of 10 children and did Physiological degrees around the world.
Figueroa developed a framework to analyse racism within society, particularly to see how equity and access to society’s resources are affected by a person’s race. This framework can also be applied to other aspects of sociology, including equity and access in sport. There are five levels to Figueroa’s Framework.
The Five Levels of Figueroa’s Framework are:
1. The Cultural Level
2. The Structural Level
3. The Institutional Level
4. The Interpersonal level
5. The Individual Level

In each level of Figueroa’s Framework, when referring to sport, there are barriers relating to Equity and Access. These barriers vary from person to person.
The Cultural level of Figueroa’s framework includes factors that consist of the social groups history, culture and ethnicity.
“Societies values, beliefs and attitudes shape and influence equity in sports and access to sport” (Hede et al 2011 Page 300)


In the Cultural Level, the main barrier for myself out of the main factors would have to be Socialisation.
Socialisation is “the process by which a human being beginning at infancy acquires the habits, beliefs, and accumulated knowledge of society through education and training for adult status,” (Merriam Webster –Bibliography #3)The reason why Socialisation is the more prominent barrier for myself is mainly due to the Secondary Socialisation1 of youth today. In our society, the main promoted and favoured sports are ones such as Rugby, AFL, Soccer, Netball, Volleyball, Basketball.
