The “Flapper” is one of the most recognizable figures in American history. Joshua Zeitz argues these “new Women” made America modern. * The Flapper is seen as the symbol of the 1920’s. Flappers not only lived a different lifestyle, but they changed the way that women were viewed altogether. Women before the roaring 20’s were limited to very few oppertuinities in America. All of this was changed however after Flappers came about. This paper argues that these women were new and modern but still held on to some traditional values during the 20’s.
* The Flapper is defined as a young, white, thin young women who liked to smoke, dance, drink, party and display her sexuality in the open to the disaproval of society. These women did not conform to the conventional ways of society because they rebelled against the way that society viewed women. In doing so, they changed fashion, behavior and anything that they felt necessary to be equal to men. This new modern trend in the early 1900’s was the begginning of a new generation of women who displayed their individuality and cleared the way for the future of women in the United States.
