There are 31 majors offered at Eastern Connecticut State University, from women studies to economics all of which provide their own enlightening course work and career choices after college. If you ask anyone why they chose their major, they will give you a unique story on how that one subject caught their eye, or how they hope to find themselves succeeding through their endeavors in a certain field. Personally, I chose accounting for the career opportunities and job security. There has been and always will be a need for accountants, people who understand, track, and can decipher complicated financial information. With a degree in accounting on my resume I can be confident in knowing that I can always find a job. Like many other subjects, accounting is a broad description for many sub categories. Categories such as tax accounting, auditing, financial, and my favorite: forensic accounting.
Like any other forensic job, forensic accountants are responsible for handling the financial investigations for criminal cases. Most law enforcement agencies have or contract forensic accountants, but the job I am most interested is being a forensic accountant for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). According to the FBI, 15% of agents are financial accountants (Forensic); this is due to the increasing number of white collar crimes being committed recently. On top of already studying accounting in university, I have always been attracted to the idea of working for the government. I’ve been in the military both active and reserve since I was 17 and have yet to find a reason not to work for the federal government for the rest of my life. You can retire and claim pension after 20 years in most cases, you have free full medical insurance, the pay is good, and the job security is outstanding.
