Overall view by Colin43. First of all we need to characterise the book. There are 2 modes of Narrative Empirical allegiance to the real. Fictional allegiance to the ideal. Empirical (reality) splits into two main parts History (verifiable) Mimesis (imitates reality) Fictional splits into two parts Romance (beauty / ideas, if only, aims to delight / frighten) Allegory (didactic) (message is clear and overt). So when we talk about a book being a Romance, we do not mean that it belongs to the Mills Boon romantic fictions. Romance also covers Myths and the Demonic. So we can now say that Frankenstein is a Romance which generally means that we start with the story and then try to find a meaning. Let us look at the devices that are used in the book 1 Exploration of the Demonic. 2. Set in Reality of history and verifiable fact (Switzerland 1816). 3. Letters and Introduction are the device that leads us to the demonic. 4. She says she thought up novel, but novel is in subconscious. 5. She appears normal and in control reassuring to the reader. 6. Novel takes on own life Power of the novel. 7. She sets it in realistic mode, but it escapes this rational approach. 8. Register of Language Gothic, Demonic ( cold, dreary, northern, icy). 9. Narrator sets up the story something about to happen. 10 Multi-narration 3 ( 4 if you count Mary in the Intro and Preface). 11. Exotic settings Russia, Alps, Polar cap. 12.
