What is a friend?
In life, there are many types of friends or so called friends, but the ones you should really acknowledge is the ones that are true friends to you. One may say that some people consider someone as a friend if it’s a person in which you see around once in a while and just nod your head to, say hi or even just hold a small conversation with. In reality, that to me is someone you would call an acquaintance. That’s also considered a person who someone slightly knows. For example, it was a Saturday morning and I decided to go for a jog. All of the sudden, I randomly see someone that I think I know. I had to look a couple times to see if I recognized that person. The guy decides to come up to me and says, “Hey, how are you? Do you remember me we use to be friends in middle school?”, and that is when I start questioning myself, “Do I even know this kid? Did we even talk?” I assumed he realized that I was clueless as to who he was so he began mentioning a class that we had together by saying, “We use to have social studies together with Ms. Aleman.” He then tells me his name and it rings a bell in my head. I respond to the kid simply with an, “Oh yes now I remember you.” I quickly had to make up an excuse as to why I didn’t remember so it wouldn’t come across to him the wrong way. After an exchange of few words here and there, we said bye to one another. As I made my way back to my car, I started contemplating on as to what he thinks a friend really is because I never had spoken to him for more than two minutes, he barely even knew who I was, and when we would see each other, we just simply acknowledged the others presence by shaking hands. I shake my head and say to myself, “No wonder it was so hard for me to recognize who he was because we were never friends, we were just acquaintances.” It became clear to me that seeing someone I recognized or someone I once met didn’t mean that, that person was automatically a “friend”.
