More and more each year we hear about how ridiculous and barbaric prisons are in America due to the increasing amount of gangs. Gangs in prison are distinguished by race, ethnicity, where you were born at and even body size. Gangs are so wide spread through prisons primarily for protection against other gangs. As of February 2012 the top ten gangs in American prisons are Neta, Dead Man Inc, Nazi Low Riders, Bloods, Texas Syndicate, La Nuestra Family, Mexican Mafia, MS-13, Black Guerilla Family, and Aryan Brotherhood. All these gangs are dangerous and are never afraid to protect their gang and defend their territory in prisons. Each gang is different in many ways and requires different things from their members but have one common goal which is to protect and expand their power.
Prison gangs were originally formed by inmates as a means to protect themselves from other inmates. Throughout the years, prison gangs have evolved from a group that provides protection to its members, to criminal entities involved in prostitution, assaults, drugs and murder. Prison gangs continue to thrive because prosecuting them has, historically, been difficult due to the fact that many members are already serving life sentences with no possibility of parole. So when you get arrested and sent to prison for all of those illegal movies and songs you’ve been downloading, it would be a good idea to know which gang you would like to join. The first prison gang on the list is Netas. Neta is the name of a Hispanic gang that was formed in the late 70s at Oso Blanco prison. It is consisted of males whose original job is to stop the violence between inmates housed in the Rio Pedras Prison.
