The Brisbane district is developing at an outstanding rate with an estimate of _____ people moving to the area each year. Due to this large increase many developments are focusing on the needs of future sustainability. Sustainability can be defined as ‘forms of progress that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.’(2010: Benefits-of-Recycling.com). The task of this essay is to compare two developments and decide which one will be most sustainable in the future. The two developments that will be undergoing analysis are Kelvin Grove Urban Village and North Lakes.

Kelvin Grove Urban Village is situated approximately 2kms from the Central Business District (CBD). This unique and sustainable project has been developed in conjunction with the Queensland Department of Housing and the Queensland University of Technology, making it ideal for all personals. Kelvin Grove is classified as ‘A unique mixed-use urban village displaying best practice in many ways.’ The second development, North-Lakes is located 25kms from the CBD and _____ from the SSC. The development’s aim can be described as a ‘master planned community – they want everyone to be able to live, work, be educated and play in the community’, thus making it sustainable in a variety of aspects. To determine which of the two developments will be most sustainable for the future will be assessed on three criteria, these are listed as followed:
1. Economic - Long term impacts on the planning and funding of development that’s sustains economic growth.
2. Social -Short term and long term impacts of satisfying basic human needs whilst guaranteeing participation within communities.
3. Environmental - Short term and long term impacts on the environment, including the conservation, recycling of resources
