2. When Longino and Doell examined the biology of behavior they found in particular one salient set or source of auxiliary assumptions, what they call ”the linear model”. According to Longino and Doell the linear model is what helps scientists interpret the data (maybe like Einstein’s theory helped Eddington in his interpretations). What are the problems with the linear model and what are the reasons for suggesting a ”complex model” in brain studies? Are the reasons good? Why – or why not?

Longino writes that ”[a]ccepting the relevance to our practice as scientists of our political commitments does not imply simple and crude impositions of those ideas onto the corner of the natural world under study” (s. 8). What may she mean by that? How is the relevance of political commitments not distorting science according to Longino? Kay (and partly Keller) suggests that political commitments and social agendas played a part in the earliest study of the molecular ”corner” of biology.
