In the first paragraph, the essay starts of by giving us a brief summary of Laura Winfield’s lifestyle and her personality. We learn that Laura is a very beautiful girl; she had much potential. She would frequently receive calls from gentleman callers, but at the same time she was very insecure of herself. I believe this might be due to the fact that she was crippled. This can cause much insecurity for any person; especially during the era of the story, when finding a partner was so imperative. Another factor that may contribute to Laura’s insecurities, which is mentioned in the essay and the story may be the mother. She would constantly pressure Laura in finding a partner. Although Laura had no major physical defects if would have been hard for her to succeed under these circumstances.
The essay states that because of her mother, this had been the cause of Laura’s temporary metamorphosis. Although the author fully blames the mother, we shouldn’t completely fault someone for the way someone may turn out, but based on what we know from the story I disagree with this statement. We later discover that it was because of Jim, her crush. The essay later states that it’s during the scene with Jim that Laura; underwent her metamorphosis. It took one boy, in this case Jim for Laura to break free from her shell even if just for a brief instance.
In one of the scenes when Laura's mother had discovered that she has dropped out of school. This was upsetting news to the mother, because she believed that only by attending college she would be successful, since she had no interest in marriage. After being confronted, she also realizes that Laura has instead been spending her time at the art museum and the birdhouses at the Zoo. "I visited the penguins every day! Sometimes I did without lunch and went to the movies." This is when the mother snaps and concludes that the only way for her daughter to survive in this world was by getting married.
