Globalization

Globalization has become essential to not only the United State but the entire world. It has a tremendous amount of impact on the U.S. economy and the nation economy. One of the reasons that it has taken on this new form during recent times has been in large part due to the, “Global mass culture dominated by the image which crosses and re-crosses linguistic frontiers much more rapidly and more easily, and which speaks across languages in a much more immediate way. It is dominated by television and by film, and by the image, and styles of mass advertising” (Hall p. 22). Simple examples of this can be seen everyday especially with in our economy. For instance, in recent article published by Salon, it writes that despite the struggling economy of the United States, larger companies like IBM and Intel who have great amounts of exposure in other countries, have been greatly improving sales due to globalization. Thus, as stated by Powell and Udaykumar, one of the benefits of Globalization has become, “ Unprecedented growth of world Economy” (p. 41).
However, globalization has also raised ethical issues in part due to the movement of services across borders. A clear example of this can be seen through the movie that we watched in lecture. Many Filipinos cross borders and leave their own country in order to find work hoping for more opportunities to improve life and increase standard of living. Unfortunately, many times in the new country they will face discrimination in the work place and in society in order to earn the same amount and be treated equally as many native of the country are treated. In addition, similar to Jason, there are many children left behind without their mom and dad because they do not have the proper visas and or the country is reluctant to allow the children enter their country suggesting that the borders of the world are not as open as globalization suggests.
