Graff Essay analysis
Graff is explaining about how schools miss great opportunities to connect student passions into
their teachings, instead injecting them with their preferences on how one should be thought. He
explains how abandoning intellectual views was a key requirement to fit in with the crowd,
whom he would refer to as the “hoods”, street savvy individuals who preferred topics involving
modern trends such as fashion and cars over Shakespearean literature. He feels that they both
have intellectual depth and goes on to explain how subjects such as sports offered a satisfying
intellectual thirst in contrast to schools that incorporated a culture that seemed rather pale and
unreal. He uses a mix of ethos and logos to start off his story relating to how he grew up in an
area were nonintellectual views were the norm and those who showed interest in academics were
often picked on, with the usage of pathos Graff explains how he would be beat by his peers for
thinking intellectually, as this was seen almost as a sign of disrespect in the “hood” community.
But in general goes on to tell how you can’t connect with the community as easily with subjects
school related as you can with more broad issues such as sports. By mixing academics and
student interests, educational systems can nurture their passion of the subject allowing the
student to be able to incorporate their areas of interests into writing allowing them to express
themselves in writing in a clear and concise matter.
