Although The Great Gatsby film and novel were telling the same story, there were many differences between the two. For the most part, the actors in the movie portrayed Fitzgerald’s descriptions of the characters in the book. However, there were many differences in the dialogues between the various characters. The movie accurately showed the party scenes at Gatsby’s mansion. However, in the book, in the scene where Nick first meets Gatsby, Nick does not know that he is talking to Gatsby himself. In the movie, Gatsby asks Nick up to his study and they have an awkward conversation. Also, in the movie, when Daisy is talking to Gatsby, the says “rich girls don’t marry poor boys”. I think this quote is a perfect addition to the story. It is the essence of Daisy’s attitude towards Gatsby in the past. Another quote that was added to the movie was when Gatsby said “you can relieve the past” after Nick says that you can’t. This quote describes Gatsby’s character and beliefs throughout the book. These additions to the movie further show the inner conflicts in the characters of Daisy and Gatsby, and they help the viewer further understand their personalities. I definitely liked the novel better than the book. I imagined some of the characters and settings differently and it was somewhat disappointing to see the film differently. I think that the movie should not have been darker in its mood. I think it portrayed the book pretty well, but some aspects of the film were disappointing only because of my expectations from the book. Overall, the movie was pretty good, but I definitely liked the book better and got more meaning out of it.
