On September 27th, 1993, I was brought into this world at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, NY. My parents had decided upon my name to be Gregory this day and I took the family name, Kane, of my father. I was named Gregory because it is a prominent name in the Catholic faith and my parents also just liked the name. There are many people with the name Gregory, 683,932 in the United States alone. Gregory is the second most used name taken by popes. Pope Gregory I or “Gregory the Great” was the pope that the Gregorian chant was named after. There are also many Gregorys in baseball such as Greg Luzinski, Greg Maddux, and Greg Dobbs. Gregory is a common masculine first name. It is derived from the Latin name "Gregorius," which was from the late Greek name "Γρηγόριος" (Grēgorios) meaning "watchful.” Through folk etymology, the name also became associated with Latin grex (stem greg–) meaning 'flock' or 'herd'. This association with a shepherd who diligently guides his flock contributed to the name's popularity among monks and popes. This means a great deal to me because I see myself as a protective person who cares greatly for his family and friends. A lot of people recognize the name Gregory with the church which is fine with me because I am a devout catholic who attends church every Sunday.
My last name, Kane, was not originally my last name. When my great grandfather arrived at Ellis Island, he was forced to change his name from Keane to Kane. The name Kane is of Irish and Gaelic origin, and its meaning is "little battler.” Personally, this does not mean much to me because I am not a fighter, but my father took karate in his youth and my grandfather was in the marines, so this does pertain to them. There are currently about 55,670 people with the last name Kane in the United States which makes it the 636th most popular last name.
Out of all of the names to be named, I am proud to be Gregory Kane. There are about 123 people named Gregory Kane out of the...
