Growing Up Good

Illustration essay I help my friend take care of his daughter most of them time and it is so rewarding. I grew up very fast. I went from partying and hanging out with my friends, to waking up early, making lunches, going to school functions, and pretty much everything else you can think of a parent doing. I have become a whole new person thanks to my friend. I don’t do any of the bad things I used to do and for the first time I’m actually doing something good for myself. I wake up every morning knowing that I have a little girl looking back at me and saying “I’m hungry”, or “Can you please turn on some cartoons?” She has made me take a good look at myself and made me question is this the person I really want to be? The answer is yes. Being around children all day I learn them inside and outside. I know their likes and dislikes, or what to do when their sad to make them smile. It’s like having your own little buddy at all times. When I’m upset I know that she will come up to me and cuddle with me and say, “Don’t be sad, I’ll tickle you if you don’t smile.” It’s the things like that, that make my day better. From a 6 year old I have learned a lot, believe it or not. I have learned not to get angry so quickly, because she is learning life too. I have learned to be patient and not to rush through everything. Just because I know how to do things quickly, she is still young and has not experienced the things that I have. I am very proud of the fact, that when I started to take care of her she was 3 years old and didn’t know much of anything. Her first 3 years of life were pretty much based in front of a television and hands wrapped around fast food. She couldn’t tell me she was hungry or thirsty, I had to be in the restroom with her at all times because she was afraid she was going to fall in. I worked very hard on her vocabulary and speech. I taught her how to count and ABC’s, all the things that a child of that age should be learning how to do. Today she is very...
