The footwear industry
In 2018, the global footwear industry is forecast to have a value of USD 318.1 billion, an
increase of 28 per cent since 2013. The US and China are the largest individual geographic
markets in the global industry, with revenue in 2014 estimated at USD 78.6 billion and USD
23.4 billion respectively. Globally, footwear retailing is fairly fragmented and highly
competitive, although the market is dominated by large buying groups.

The opportunity
A customer service opportunity, which has yet to be properly addressed in this sector, is the
correct fitting of shoes. A 2012 study of over 1400 individuals in the US, by the Institute for
Preventive Foot Health, found that 78 per cent of adults had experienced foot issues at
some time 3 often due to poorly fitting shoes, including those that are too tight, too high or
poorly structured. Similarly in the UK, a 2014 study by the College of Podiatry, involving
2000 adults, found more than 30 per cent of men and nearly 50 per cent of women admitted
buying shoes that didn’t fit properly 4.
