Gun Control is a topic one should strongly focus on due to the increasing rate of gun violence faced by our society. The question is what makes one think they have the right to take one’s life? Why do people carry guns? Access to firearms makes killing easy, efficient, and anonymous, which increases the lethality of crime. If gun are controlled, there will be less crime. The history of gun laws started in 1791, when the second amendment ratified the right of the people to keep and bear arms. This amendment gives the people the right to own arms for their defense. The second amendment should be reconsidered due to the mass amount of deaths caused by guns. Stricter gun control laws and licensing are necessary to save lives.
According to a study, “carrying a gun for self-defense was 5 times more likely to be shot during an assault than an assault victim without a gun.” This means that guns are not the most effective and reliable form of self-defense. Many people claim that adults with guns are often not effectively trained. There are some states that do not require a lot of training to own a handgun. In addition to crime, handguns can increase the risk of suicide. In 2005 " 53% of all suicides in the US involved a firearm "(Branas). Congress needs to pass new laws to strictly control the access to guns.
Current gun registration laws are not sufficient for law enforcement. To help prevent and to help solve crimes, guns should be registered and categorized before used to commit a crime. The only ones that would be threatened by this policy would be criminals. If guns were regulated just as cars, there would be less crime. An owner of a car must have a title and tag at each point of sale, driving training, written test, practical test, health requirements, liability insurance on each vehicle, renewal and inspection at each interval to insure the safety of himself and others on the road.
