Richard Garcia WRC 1013.043 Prof. M. Leath Essay 2 HARDCORE Some get punched in their faces at hardcore music shows. Some put their arms around their fellow brothers and sing along. The word ‘hardcore’ is defined as an exceptionally harsh form of punk rock, but I think hardcore could be more defined than that. Why is there such a difference in the attitude of hardcore shows? It is because there are different types of hardcore and each type has a somewhat different, but still alike, attitude with it. There are quite a few different types of hardcore. Each type is written slightly differently, different dressed members, come from different areas and carry different beliefs and values. One type of hardcore is referred to as “gangster hardcore”. Most hardcore has a fast bass drum beat and a quick snare but gangster hardcore has a slow bass drum beat and a fast snare. The lyrics are usually about friendship, family and standing up for beliefs. The members of gangster hardcore dress just how you would imagine. They wear basketball shorts, big sports jerseys and nice hats. Gangster hardcore originated on the west coast of the United States in the city of Los Angeles. Most gangster hardcore bands do not believe in the “straight edge” (no drugs, sex or alcohol) system that many hardcore bands believe in. Some examples of gangster hardcore bands are Terror, Sudden Death and Throwdown. Another type of hardcore is called “Straight Edge Hardcore”. Straight edge hardcore riffs usually have a very fast bass drum beat and a very fast snare beat. The lyrics are about the straight edge lifestyle, friendship, family and respect. Straight Edge hardcore band members usually dress in vibrant colored shirts without sleeves and little basketball shorts or cut off denim jeans made to be shorts.
