One of my focus areas of Healthy People 2020 is Overweight. As per CDC study, more than one-third of US adult population are obese and approximately 17% of children and adolecents aged 2-19 years are obese. These statistics are only obese population. What about over weight population but not obese. Overweight can cause many diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and even cancer. My concern is the health care costs in U.S are very high compared to other developed countries. As per CDC, "the estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the U.S was $147 billion in 2008." The weight problem is not related to education and ethincity. As per CDC, obesity increased at all income and education levels. The only observation that was made by CDC study is "that higher income women are less likely to be obese when compared to lower income women". Which is a significant find in my view.

Based on 2012 stats Obesity prevalance in California is 25% (CDC..). As per cdc, The Healthy People 2010 goal was to lower the obesity prevalence to 15% in all the states in USA, but no single state achieved this goal. As per California Department of Public Health (CDPH), the rate of obesity in california is acutally increased from 20.4 percent in 2000 to 23.6 percent in 2005. One significant observation from the data is CDPH found low adult obesity prevalence in Asians (8.2% in 2005) and whites (19.4% in 2005). HP2010 goal in California was achieved only in Asian population and White population is almost near to the goal of 15%.

CDC's division of Nutirition and Physical and Obesity (DNPAO) funded several programs to contain this obesity epedemic in U.S through healthy eating and through active lifestyle. DNPAO provides support in training, surveillance, technical assistance and partnership developments. The goal is to improve healthy lifestyle and healthy eating in schools, workplaces, hospitals and communities. As per 2010 California school health data, it...
