Abstract

What is Healthy People 2010 you ask? Healthy People 2010 are a comprehensive set of health objectives for the nation to achieve over the first decade of the new century. The health objectives can be used by all people, communities, organizations as well as others to develop different and unique programs to improve the overall health of our people. Leading health indicators includes physical activity, overweight and obesity, tobacco use, substance abuse, responsible sexual behavior, mental health, injury and violence, environmental quality, immunizations, and access to health care. Healthy People 2010 offer a simple but powerful idea: provide health objectives in a format that enables diverse groups to work together.

Health People 2010 is a road map to better health for all and can be used by states, communities, professional organization and other to improve health. Health People 2010 has two main goals: to increase quality and years of healthy life, and to eliminate health disparities among different segments of the population. There are four proposed enabling goals accompany the overarching goals. The purpose enabling goals is to provide strategies to achieve the: promote healthy behaviors, protect health, assure access to quality health care, and strengthen community prevention. With are served as a guide for developing objectives that will actually measure progress. There are 467 specific objectives grouped into 28 focus areas, each representing an important public health area. Data for the population-based objectives may be presented separately for select populations, such as racial, gender, educational attainment, or income groups. Each objective has a target for improvements to be achieved by the year 2010.
