Duty is defined in Webster’s dictionary as, “obligatory tasks, conduct, service or functions that arise from ones position”. It is one of the primary values in the Army today. Duty is the reason why we get up every day and prepare to defend the United States of America with our lives. This is why it is very important to be at your appointed place of duty when you are obligated to, or even just strengthen and support the team, platoon, company and the entire organization. Duty is one of the values outlined the Army values. In my opinion it is one of the most important of all of them. It is very important but without the other values, Duty by itself cannot assist in accomplishing the mission. We still have the other values like, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage. These all set up the framework for us to be able to accomplish or duty as soldiers. All of them work hand in hand with each other. Fulfill your obligations. Doing your duty means more than carrying out your assigned tasks. Duty means being able to accomplish tasks as part of a team. The work of the U.S. Army is a complex combination of missions, tasks and responsibilities — all in constant motion. Our work entails building one assignment onto another. You fulfill your obligations as a part of your unit every time you resist the temptation to take “shortcuts” that might undermine the integrity of the final product. Whether or not you or your fellow peers and subordinates take the time to understand how you and your punctuality (being at your appointed place of duty) affects your Duty to the army.
