Heredity and Hormone Effects in the Human Endocrine System

Hormones and heredity have an impact on human behavior. Hormones begin at puberty, which begins about mid-teens. Hormones can have a drastic affect on moods, emotional reactions, and reactions to stress, concentration, and sexual behavior.

There are several glands that make up the endocrine system that secrete different hormones. The thyroid gland, just below the larynx, produces thyroxin. Thyroxin regulates how energetic a person is. That determines a person’s metabolism, or how fast their body uses energy. An overactive thyroid causes over excitability, insomnia, and agitation. Not enough thyroxin makes a person feel tired and can lead to them becoming overweight, because their body is not producing enough energy to burn calories. Within the thyroid glands are parathyroid’s. These four little glands are responsible for balancing the levels of calcium and phosphate. The pineal gland, midway in your brain controls you sleep-wake cycles, also known as your biological clock. The pancreas secretes two hormones: insulin and glucagon to regulate blood sugar. The pituitary glands have the biggest role of all of the glands. It is located below the brain and produces the largest number of hormones from the entire body. The pituitary glands control blood pressure, thirst, body growth, sexual behavior and interest, water needs, and other functions. The gonads are the reproductive organs. The areas are known as testicles on males and ovaries on females.
