ABSTRACT
The Security Role plays a vital role in protecting and securing electronic protected health information (ePHI). All covered entities and business associates that deal with ePHI are mandated to ensure that they remain in compliance with the Security Rule. Failure to do so can result in severe penalties and be detrimental for those covered entities and business associates. In order for covered entities and business associates to remain in compliance with this rule, there are certain safeguards that they must implement in order for the objectives of the Security Rule to be met. This paper will cover just that.
The first section of this paper will define exactly what the Security Rule is. Some people might think that it is the same as the HIPAA Privacy Rule, but there is a difference. The Security Rule was implemented to solely secure ePHI. This rule could not have come at a better time, especially since new technology is constantly being introduced in the health care industry. The rule identifies required and addressable implementation specifications. It is obvious what required means; however, the addressable specifications provides covered entities and business associates with the option of choosing how they will met the standard mention in the Security Rule.
