According to Linda Hirshman’s article “Homeward bound,” she focuses on elite women who choose to abandon their career over family. They choose family simply because of society thinks that women should be taking care of their child and housework rather than men even when they are the educated elite. Hirshman also states that the number of women attended universities is greater than the number of men but most of women choose to give up their goals. Due to tradition, men often expect their wives to look after the children. Even after married, there are some women who quit their jobs because they don’t hope to work anymore and there are some women who aren’t devote to their jobs. Maybe because of most women just hope to get married and have babies. Most of them think that housework is women’s duty and they are just following the tradition. She thinks that women should always follows the three rules to treat themselves well where money is the sign of success. Most women find it difficult to marry to those who are poorer and it would be better off for women to marry younger men or much older men. One of the reasons why women choose to stay home is because of economics temptation. The couples think that they could save more money when one of them stay home and look after the child rather than hiring a full-time nanny. The other reasons because without women at home, the house will be dirty and unorganized. Some women who do not quit their jobs for their family often feel guilty about it. The glass ceiling has limited their path. Therefore, it is hard for them just to break the glass ceiling because that’s ceiling is also where you live in.
In David Brooks’ “The Year of Domesticity,” he argues against Linda Hirshman where he thinks that Hirshman is wrong. He mentions human flourishing and questions everyone to think whether with family, or at the workplace is more memorable.
