One of the most important events in U.S. History is the Civil War. This is the war that unified all the states and made this such a powerful country in the world. The Civil War is what ended slavery in the United States, making for a stronger federal government for our country.
This war was fought all over the country, and there was a lot of bloodshed. There were over 600,000 deaths during this war. The north had more people killed then the south, but the outcome is what the north was fighting for, the end of slavery.

The south was also not so unhappy. They called it “the lost cause”. The generals felt like they were mythic heroes as they almost ready to surrender. According to Historian Shelby Foote “Any understanding of this nation has to be based . . . on an understanding of the Civil War. . . . The Civil War defined us as what we are, and it opened us to being what we became, good and bad things. It is very necessary if you’re going to understand the American character in the 20th century to learn about this enormous catastrophe of the mid-19th century. It was the crossroads of our being”.

So the question is why Shelby Foote wrote that to understand United States one should know the civil war. Because it is the civil war what has made us what we are in present. From civil war it can be known that what the country has lost and what has it can attain. To know how the country was or how the country has reached this position knowledge on civil war is a must as it is the most important parts in the history of the United States. It is the civil war what has made the United States from some different fighting states and give them the feeling of people of one unified nation.
