DESCRIPTION: In my work experience was a quit day, most of the children are out sick whit chicken pox. So I decided to do an activity from the beginning to the end all by myself whit the children. The activity was about doing a card for mother day. I looked on the internet in the weekend and I found a nice flower pot type card, age appropriate for the children in my group.
That day there were 9 children present. After circle time I sat down the children and started the activity by cutting the paper for the pot. Then I realised that I don’t have enough scissors for all children and I had to ask them to share. The children from one table were cutting the paper but the others started to play whit each other, throwing the paper around.
FEELINGS: I started to panic because I felt that my activity will end up in a big mess; I had to closely supervise those children who were using the scissors but in the same time I had to stop the others throwing the paper around. I realised in that moment that is too much for me and that I can’t manage everything by myself and I asked my colleague to step in and help me.
EVALUATION AND ANALYSES: Looking back now I know that I was wrong from the beginning. First I had to plan my activity better, I should’ve checked if I had enough materials, and to give each group something to do for example: one group to cut the paper and the other to do the hand print and in this way to keep everybody busy.
CONCLUSION AND ACTION PLAN: Next time I will make a game plan of the activity beforehand and I will make sure that every child have something to do. Also I will make a list for my manager whit the art and crafts materials that she need to buy for the class.
