Introduction
The guideline in the multicultural section of the American Psychological Association (APA) states that psychologist may have a different perception of their clients and this is a very true statement. The excellent thing about living in a multicultural society is that one can have the compliance of political and social and factions to allow expressions of different cultures within its own society without penalizing them. Guideline number two of the APA states that psychologist should recognize and understand the fact that people from diverse backgrounds are ethnically and racially different individuals. I believe that having an open-mind and understanding that not everyone is not the same can truly be beneficial.
Biases, Perceptions, Attitudes, and Beliefs
I worked at a boy’s group home as a supervisor for about 2 years and I have met people from different cultural backgrounds. Working at this group home I have notice that people may have different attitudes or opinions about different types of subjects that were discuss in our working environment. I was always open to hear different suggestions or the beliefs of others because I learned from each person whom worked with me. When one works with a group of people from different backgrounds, one must realize that not all will agree on certain issues. But as a team, a conclusion must be made by everyone coming to an agreement on the specific topic. Working with people from different backgrounds helped me to realize that human beings were raised differently, so one may think differently. I remember having a supervisor, who trained me, tell me that I must be mean to the employees just to get the respect that I needed.
