Alas, the best-selling non-fiction book by Jon Krakeur about the foot loose life of Chris McCandless is finally brought to the big screen in INTO THE WILD. This epic film directed by Sean Penn, takes place in 1992 where a young adventurer burns all of his identities, gives his life savings to charity, and begins hitch-hiking across America to achieve his life-long dream of reaching Alaska. He goes from town to town, hopping trains, camping with aging hippies, briefly working for a farmer that isd played by the famous Vince Vaughan and becoming very attached to a retired leather worker, who was awarded Best Supporting Actor in this film(Hal Holbrook). These two boys at heart become so attached Ron Franz (Hal Holbrook) Proposes to adopt Chris as his son or grandson. When Chris had walked away from this offer, it had brought a tear to Ron’s eye. While all of this is occurring, his parents are sick with worry and clueless of his existence. This film was narrated mostly by Chris’s sister, Carine (Jane Malone) and she had spoken of the effect of Chris’s absence on the family. In the end, Chris achieves his dream of reaching Alaska where he reaches a remote campsite and finds an abandoned bus which he calls “The Magic Bus.”. He lives in Alaska for a few good months until he ends up running out of supplies and resulting in his death. INTO THE WILD is a must-see. It’s the kind of movie you have to watch from the beginning to understand the film. Throughout the entire film, it jumps back and forth of his journey. From, the beginning of his journey, to the last few weeks he has to live on the bus. This sort of film begins to merge the storyline where it results in tension and where it is easily recognized that Chris will befall. Penn had great admiration for this subject and tried as much as he possibly could to relate the movie to the book.
