How has globalization impacted Hall’s and Hofstede’s Cultural dimensions which are based on the original study he conducted back in 1968 and 1972? Do they still apply today and hold value?
The world is becoming more increasingly integrated, thanks to globalization which has affected business by increasing the competitiveness of the market place, restructuring of boundaries and essentially creating a level playing field. While this may be true, on the other hand societal cultures and the traits espoused by Hofstede, undergo change slowly and at variable rates, their core elements often remarkably resistant to globalized forces mostly associated with western and specifically American influences.
The Hofstede model distinguishes cultures according to five dimensions: Power distance, Individualism/collectivism, Masculinity/Femininity, Uncertainty avoidance and Long/Short-term orientation. The model provides scales from 0-100 for 76 countries for each dimension and each country has position on each scale or index, relative to other countries. Although the country scores were originally produced in the early 1970s, many replications of Hofstede’s study on different samples have proved that the country ranking in his data is still valid today
