The Holy Ghost People is a narration of a Pentecostal community in Scrabble Creek, West Virginia. People would come as far as two to three hundred miles away to visit the snake driven crusade. This wasn’t your ordinary church service. Church members are shown in trances, speaking in tongues, convulsing, and handling poisonous snakes. These lethal rituals became clear early on when interviewing the brothers and sisters from the church. One lady described the pleasure of the trance she enters when possessed by the Holy Ghost. She told the camera that, “It felt like nothing in this world can bother me.” One man joined the movement after getting out of prison. He said he tried all kinds of different churches Baptist, Catholic etc. He felt that being apart of the Scrabble Creek church gave him a release. He claimed that he could feel the quickening power of the Holy Ghost. It was hard to believe watching this documentary that people would risk their lives to believe in something so powerful. I see this film as some sort of community cohesion or witchcraft. People were in a tourette’s state of mind it seemed like. Their bodies were convulsing and flaying around on the floor. Children were documented in the film as clueless that the snakes could strike and kill them. One thing I did think was kind of neat about the film was how there was know minister. Anyone in the crowd was their own person. They could do you say what they pleased. They took in little almost know money and still enjoyed the community and Holy Spirit. You see men and women kissing each other on the mouth. This shows that they trusted one another and accepted you for whatever it maybe. Men and women sang and danced together prayed for each other. You see this today in many churches it was just a lot more eccentric with the Holy Ghost People. I wonder how many people died from being bit by the snakes.
