Even upon entry we were scooped up into a marathon, a race to the door. The warmly clothed people are a in a hurry, not to miss the first race. Walking sluggishly and out of our element we made our way in to the building, thankfully to our distant left we heard an ancient raspy voiced women called out to us “do you have reservations?, would you like a program?” Able to breath again we smiled and cut through a cloud of smoke to nod at her puggeyface. “Phillips” we all responded in sync. Within seconds she croaked “booth 108” and pointed to a direction past the colossal buffet and the fifty some televisions sets programmed on various stations. Somehow we made our way to a flight of green carpeted stairs, while we walked downward to booth 108, the scents of old spice and Chanel number five rushed at my face and nested in my nose. When I looked up and gazed past the chanting crowds, I finally saw it, the so called booth was instead the kids table at Christmas dinner, a five by five table with four unsteady chairs, sharp around the edges, absolutely no arm or leg room, and a crooked piece of construction paper with the number 108 stuck to the top by scotch tape. Ignoring my claustrophobia I was ready to bet. All at once we opened the program and quickly skimmed through the beginning pages with bullets of “how to wager “and “types of wagers”. The names of the horses that would race read like an out of order box of books random by all means. There were many numbers and names across the information for the horses and all were alien to my eyes and none made any sense. Moments had passed then I heard him, Kurt was bouncing around the aisle as he made his way to us, “what did I tell you?” “The kid can’t lose, how much did you win?” “Seventy three dollars that’s fifty more then I came in with, thanks to you.”
