“The House On Mango Street” is a book by Sandra Cisneros. The Story deals with characters that lived in a neighborhood called Mango Street and they are share the same feeling of entrapped. “They always told us that one day we would move into a house a real house that would be ours for always so we wouldn’t have to move every year”(0 ?). At first, Esperanza was happy to move to a house where she did not have to move every year. When they finally moved there, everything was torn down. When people asked her where she lives she was very ashamed to talk about it. One day a Nun asked her where she lives and she pointed and Nun said you live there like she is nothing. Esperanza realized that she did not truly belong on the house on Mango Street. It is not her home
When Esperanza started to think about herself more Positively and about the community around her and when she was trying to fit in she was realizing that the neighborhood and the house is not that all terrible. When she leaves house on Mango Street her family told her not to forget them. Esperanza said that she is leaving to come back. Mango Street does not leave her “I have inherited her name but I don’t want to inherit her place by the window” (11). She was named after her Grandmother but she does not want to be like her, she was sad that she could not be every thing in the world. Esperanza did not want to be one of those women who stared at the window wishing to be everything but did not do any thing about their talents, Esperanza wants to be successful in life and find freedom.
Esperanza is in trapped in Mango Street and she can’t do any thing but change her future on her own; she cannot stay in Mango Street. ”One day I’ll own my own house, but I won’t forget who I am or where I came from “ (108).
