In all practicality, virtuous behavior would seem to be a subjective as well as elusive state of being. Subjective in the fact that virtuous behavior is in and of itself an intuitive state of being that is seemingly determined by the interpretation of each individuals personal acts and responses to any myriad of situations between the two extremes of excess and deficiency; and elusive in reference to the arduous nature of achieving and maintaining the intermediate domain between that which is considered excess and defect. So then how does one determine, achieve, and maintain what virtuous behavior would be? Some virtue theorists would suggest that the practicum set for by Aristotle, known as The Golden Mean, could be used as guide to lead one onto the path of virtuous behavior. “Virtue, then, is a state of character concerned with choice, lying in a mean, i.e. the mean relative to us, this being determined by rational principle, and by that principle by which the man of practical wisdom would determine it. Now it is a mean between two vices, that which depends on excess and that which depends on defect; and again it is a mean because the vices respectively fall short of what is right in both passions and actions, while virtue both finds and chooses that which is intermediate” (Waller, 2008, p. 107). In other words, Aristotle seems to be suggesting that the path on which virtuous behavior lies is the practice on moderation. Aristotle understood that how someone considers moderation is relative to each individual, so virtuous behavior is then a view of how individuals practice moderation in accordance to their principles. These principles may be considered the boundaries that keep individuals within the two extremes of excess and defect. As humans are beings that learn and adapt, each person’s principles are in a continual state of evolution and refinement as they test the limits of their own boundaries within the two extremes that lead to moderation. While the...
