How Does Peter Medak Gain the Audience’s Sympathy for Derek Bentley in the Film “Let Him Have It”!?

The film let him have it was produced in 1991 and was directed by peter medak. The film was set during the 1940 and 1950’s, it is about the story of Derek Bentley and how he was wrongly accused of murdering a policeman while trying to break into a warehouse. The director peter medak gives a biased opinion towards Derek, but in a good way he constantly throughout the film shows his sympathy towards Derek Bentley. This in turn makes the audience also feel sympathy for Derek, he emphasises the sympathy the audience feels towards Derek by exploiting the fact that he has epilepsy and that he has the mind of a young child. There are two main themes in the film, these are, Capital Punishment and the injustice of the British Judicial System. The film shows how both of these themes affected Derek Bentley and his family.
At the beginning of the film during the credits, there is a slow daunting music in the background. This tells us it is going to start out with a sad scene, or the film is going to be sad altogether. This prepares us to feel sympathy for the characters as the following scenes are going to be sad. In the opening scene, it is set in 1941 during the Second World War in London. To begin with we hear sirens, screaming and shouting. This makes us aware that there is danger or something bad has just happened. This gains our sympathy as we know that people are in danger. This is mixed with close ups or the injured people and fire in the street. This emphasises the danger and how frightened the people are. This makes the audience feel sorry for the people therefore building up the sympathy altogether. There is a transition shot of 2 injured civilians, one who is having a bandage wrapped around his head. This shows us there is allot of injuries because of what has happened.
