Internet and how it affects Our Lives
As the world changes so does technology. Since the invention of the Internet a broad span of information and resources has become available worldwide. The trend of this technology has opposed both negative and positive concerns of privacy, and safety issues through out the country.
Privacy
Privacy has become one of the major focal points amongst users today. The Internet and its resources were intended to exhibit a sense of convenience for business transactions, and personal/professional communication
While this is extremely convenient being able to pay a bill, order merchandise, set professional/personal appointments, and actively communicate virtually. The inconvenience stepped in after the discovery of the ability to hack into computer systems and retrieve personal information. As Mutz, J. (June 11, 2001). Stated: “Most Americans are familiar with the idea of giving permission for certain uses of information when signing a form in a doctor's office. But we seldom use opportunities to limit the use of information provided when ordering a product or service on the Internet. Even though many companies market programs that protect e-mail privacy, less than 10 percent of users bother to use them” not taking the time to utilize privacy options is how identity theft and financial lost occurs.
Safety
Internet safety is also a high priority for users. Children have access to information ranging from building and or rebuilding bombs/guns, and adult chat rooms. Weapons used in the columbine slaying are a prime example how information from an Internet source turned deadly. Minimal parental supervision has allowed easy access for sexual predators to lure children away from the safety of their homes.
Conclusion
With this type of information readily available it has cause a multitude of concern with in the professional, personal, and academic environment as well as in home.
