One of the most fundamental times for me in learning to read and write would be in my 5th grade English class. The year started as any other would with me enjoying all my classes and doing pretty good in them, except for English. This was no surprise as I was naturally gifted in the ways of math but lacked in the English department for some time now. As the year progressed on I began to fall behind with my grades more than the usual amount, and was actually failing headed into the final 6, 6 weeks. After noticing that I was failing by a few points at this point I asked my teacher what I could do in order to bring my grade up and allow me to pass. My teacher was very understanding to my situation and was willing to help me but was going to make me earn it. Naturally being young and not really having been challenged too much before, I was reluctant to do anything in order to raise my grade and wished she would just raise it and make it easy for me. A few weeks passed and my grade was still a few points behind passing and at this point I began to get quite worried that I was going to get held back and lose all my friends while they all moved onto middle school, and I would still be stuck in elementary school, alone.
Being so close to the end of the year I would only have a few chances left to raise my grade. I would have to abnormally good on my remaining assignments in order to raise my grade to where it needed to be. First thing we had coming up was our last spelling test of the year, and for once I actually studied and put in a decent amount of effort into learning the words. When the test came back I had done well, especially for my standards at the time, and came out of it making a B+. This raised my grade up 2-3 points but I was still a point in the hole and the 2 remaining assignments weren’t tests so I would need to do very well on both in order for them to affect my grade enough.
