I would like to participate in a foreign-exchange program called AFS. It is a highly respected exchange-student program that has been sending students like me abroad for over 60 years. This program allows teenagers to live in another country and immerse themselves in the culture. I want to participate in either a one semester-long or one summer-long program that either leaves this summer or fall.
I realize that this is a big thing and you two are hesitant, but I feel that will benefit me and give me life experiences and I am ready for this step. There are lots of information webinars that are for parents and the student that I will be signing up for. I have put a lot of thought, prayer, and hard work into my decision and the packet of information that I made for you.
Pros and Cons
Here are some pros and cons that come with this exchange-student program.
Pros
I will be fluent in a second language (This can be a challenge but I know I can do it and become more independent and mature in the process.)
This program will help mature me and help me learn how to interact with different types of people
I will learn how to communicate with people in many different ways including a different language, and different styles of thinking
I will get to explore another country and have fun with new people
I will meet new friends and build relationships with new people
I can get more colleges interested in me because I know another language and this shows leadership and colleges really like this program and what it does
I can learn new cultures and see how the church works in other countries
I can gain leadership skills and people skills
Colleges like when students stand out by the AFS program
I will be more prepared for a mission and college by becoming a little more independent
This will give me a chance to show what my morals are and strengthen them by showing what they are
