In any organisation to join a traditional labour union, workers must either be given voluntary recognition from their employer or have a majority of workers in a bargaining unit vote for union representation. The employees of Geogizmo should first organise them so that they could select a voluntary leader who could gather support from all employees within that company in forming a union. Then this leader should get at least thirty per-cent of employee signatures out of all the workers at the company. In the case of Geogizmo this would mean getting at least 15 or more signatures for the approval of starting the process of unionisation. If at least 15 employees of Geogizmo sign this petition then there are two alternative methods to proceed. The easier and simpler method is the card check method where the petition which was signed has the signatures of the majority of the employees which is more than 50 per cent. This petition is then presented to the employer as proof that the employees wish to form a union in the company.
If the organisation does not accept the card check method as authorisation for a union, then the alternative method must be used in order to proceed. After the petition is submitted an election is usually held after two months where the employees vote whether to unionise or not and the result is the simple majority of votes meaning at least greater than fifty per cent. To ensure fairness and remove mistrust observers from all parties can be present during the counting of votes. Once votes are counted, a decision on unionization occurs, and at that time, the collective bargaining process begins.
Almost all employers are eligible for union organization there is no minimum size or...
