The Human Tendencies

Human tendencies are creative impulses that guide human beings in the development of broad potentialities. It is an energy that is so powerful, it is created. These creative possibilities urge the individual and the social group towards progress with a sense of fulfillment. Dr. Maria Montessori believed that children are born with incredible learning potentialities and an intrinsic desire to explore, discover, and learn about their world. She believed that all children are born with potentialities: the ability to crawl, to walk, to talk, etc. It is the human tendencies that guide them to these potentialities.
Through years of insightful observations of the children in her care, Dr. Montessori developed an ingenious and holistic educational method based on the human tendencies. This method was designed to help each child reach his full potential in all areas of life and allow for his development as an individual to adapt to his culture, time and place. She created a pedagogy that could work in harmony with, and harness, the powerful process under way to support the self actualization in each child. This is important so that the child feels a sense of comfort and self-confidence thus being able to try new things.
Adaptation is to be one with, feel harmony (physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally). It is essential for our well-being. Dr. Montessori explains adaptation as happiness, an ease and the sort of inner equilibrium which gives a sense of security to the child. First the child has to become and once he does, he belongs. It is a process in which we are all constantly going through. There is a difference between adjusting and adapting. Adjusting is to have to, trying to fit in. Adapting is not losing who you are and still being able to fit in.
