A transformation takes place in the life of the protagonist Janie Crawford from the novel “The eyes were watching God”. Her character is developed by the three different men whom she married. Her character begins to shape “ Like that of a great tree”. A tree is planted it’s roots take it’s form with the strength of the sun. The tree grows, with the sun and the watering of life’s nature “the leaves also take shape with the things suffered, things enjoyed, and the things done and undone. Dawn and doom were in the branches of her life.”
Janie’s life starts taking form when she married her first husband. The antagonist Logan was a selfish man looking to only satisfy his needs. Logan tries to mold women to his image so that he can have the upper hand and control every part of the relationship. He would never allow Janie to go with him anywhere. Jamie was restricted to staying home and taking care of the mule and his field. All Janie wanted was to search for the meaning of Love thru this relationship. However Logan robs Janie of her identity and tries to bring down her self-esteem by telling her “no other man” will ever want her. He tries to belittle her to the point of denying her of his love in bed. Not realizing that he was shaping Janie’s character to be a woman of freedom. Logan than transforms in to an abuser. Logan verbally abuses Janie by threatening to “kill her” because she no longer wants to agree to his domineering ways. Logan tried to convince Janie about what Nanny told her, that “she would never find another man like him.” He thought he was doing Nanny a favor by marrying Janie. However, Janie was not in need of this marriage. Instead she became a confident woman, ready to take life by the horns.
