In Suzanne Collins’ the Hunger Games the character that gave Katniss inspiration and strength to carry on the most was Primrose Everdeen, her little sister.
At the beginning Collins portrayed that Katniss was protective and caring over Prim. Collins wrote “I protect Prim in every way I can… the anguish I feel when she’s in pain wells up in my chest and threatens to register on my face,” (Hunger 15). Collins showed how deep and powerful Katniss’ feelings toward Prim were when she wrote this. This protective characteristic that Katniss shows was almost like that of a mother bear when her cubs get into trouble. Prim being in pain triggers Katniss to react; it gives her the strength and motivation to get Prim back to a happy state instead of undergoing pain. When Prim was chosen as tribute Katniss’ reaction was “the impact had knocked every wisp of air from my lungs... struggling to inhale, to exhale… trying to remember how to breathe, unable to speak,” (Collins 21). Katniss obviously was shocked by this. What people don’t see is that it strengthened her (almost) obsession to protect Prim. Defending Prim in the beginning of the book seemed like it was the only thing constantly stimulating Katniss. So this happening nearly killed her inside, but immediately she sprung to action. Prim said to Katniss “You will try, won’t you? Really, really try?” (Collins 36). Prim saying this, even though it is not mentioned in the book, makes Katniss gain a new sense of urgency to try and come home so Prim does not experience that pain talked about earlier. If Prim experienced that agony there is no way she would have been able to survive. So Prim does not have to fend for herself with their neglectful mother; Katniss was now encouraged to win the Hunger Games, not for herself but for Prim.
Towards the middle of the book Katniss said “Her name is Prim… and I love her more than anything…she asked me to try really hard to win... I swore I would,” (Collins 129). Katniss really...
